Azimuth and elevation

To aim at a satellite, a rotor turns the antenna in azimuth (0° north, 90° east, 180° south, 270° west) and raises it in elevation (0° on the horizon, 90° overhead).

On the sky dial, the zenith is at the centre, the horizon on the edge, north up and east on the right, as on a compass lying flat.
A small satellite yagi has a beam about thirty degrees wide: within 15°, the signal is there; within 5°, it is at its best.
A satellite over Spain, seen from JN18, is to the south-west, rather low; above the station, it is overhead: all of geography reads as azimuth and elevation.
Near the zenith, the azimuth turns very fast: that is where a rotor struggles, and one must think ahead.
